Cuenca Crash Out of the Libertadores

Deportivo Cuenca were mauled by Caracas who for the first time in their history are in the quarter-finals. The beginning of the game Cuenca were playing quite well but after they conceded a penalty when the goalkeeper fouled Darío Damian Figueroa in the box, it was over. Cuenca lost all their morale leaving Figueroa’s celebration that consisted of getting a imaginary crossbow and shoot three arrows at the Cuenca goal almost prophetic. If that wasn’t enough Emilio Renteria scored a screamer that was simply sublime which left Cuenca with no hope of a comeback. Enough talk, see for yourself:

Deportivo Cuenca received Caracas at home and were playing in a pitch full of puddles, when I was looking at the game I was surprised that the ref didn’t stop the game. Both teams couldn’t even pass the ball on the ground because it slowed down because of the puddles so everybody was doing long passes to each other but I digress. Deportivo Cuenca were down early by a header by Cichero who scored from a free-kick assisted by José Manuel Rey (in case you are wondering, yes its the same player who scored that goal against Ecuador from close to half field in the first match of the World Cup Qualifiers in Quito). After that Cuenca were attacking the whole game and got a questionable penalty which Teixeira netted in after that Villabla scored to give Cuenca the score of 2-1. The man of the match for me (and apparently Fox Sports) was Matamoros. He created many opportunities and had great ball control. Without a doubt the best player of the Venezuelean side was Renny Vega who saved their team from losing at least of a difference of five goals. Everything will be defined in Venezuela and Caracas already bagged the every so important away goal.

Cuenca Are Representing Ecuador Now

Deportivo Cuenca tied against Guarani away 1-1 and assured their place in the next round of the Copa Libertadores. They are the only Ecuadorian team left in the tournament. Hopefully this year the trophy stays in Ecuador.

LDU suffered a loss at home against Sport Recife 2-3. They left the tournament which they won last year as last in the group. Hopefully Deportivo Cuenca will do better.

Now that the current champions and Deportivo Quito crashed out of the Copa Libertadores this week, only Deportivo Cuenca is left alive with strong possibilities to advance to the next round after beating none other than Boca Juniors. This is the first time a Ecuadorian team has beaten Boca Juniors ever.

Cristian Benitez & Pedro Quiñónez’s team Santos Laguna suffered a pentalty at the last moment that eliminated them from the CONCACAF Champions League. I am starting to think this is a curse that is following Ecuadorian players……
