Who’s Your No.2?
Less than four days from Ecuador’s Group A opening match against Poland. Germany and Costa Rica will kick things off just before that game. Sixty-four matches in a month’s time. Sweet!
Which got me thinking–what other team(s) do you root for and why? Is there some complicated calculus that leads you to cheer for the Netherlands, or did you once find a Togo jersey at a second-hand store? Same continent? Different continent? Uniforms, star players, your wife/husband/girlfriend/mailman’s home country? Any of you cheer for Ecuador even though it’s not your primary team?
Let’s hear it.

Nice story, mdo. Well, not that your family had to flee Spain, but you get my meaning.
You can count me in the surely-Spain-will-advance-far-this-time crowd.

The Confed Cup was a little World Cup and Argentina suffered a sad defeat.
So als Football allways gives a second chance, this time ist Argentina’s turn…

In the spirit of the under dog. I”ll have to pick Trinidad and Tobago to take it all. If this were to happen I can see a nice little Disney movie similiar to the “Jamaican Bob sledding team” soon to be released in a movie theater near you.

The United States. My family is Spanish, so I hope La Seleccion has more luck this time around, but I was born in the US, so they’re my definite no.2.
That said, if the Yanks don’t advance I’ll probably root for either Portugal or Mexico. But I sure hope Spain bucks the trend and finally shows what they can do.

Thanks, Malik.
Speaking of North Africa and the USA, Maroc looked pretty good against the United States last week.

Argentina. Since Ecuador made it a habit, until 2002 of not comepting in a World Cup, I always supported Argentina. I wasn’t too wild about Argetina’s teams in 1990 and 1998 due to their style of play but other than that I have always followed Argentina. And I especially like their current team.
Since I now live in the US, I also want to see the US team do well but with Bruce Arena as the coach I just don’t like the team and many of the players on the US squad I don’t care for either. This World Cup will be the one where I least care about the US doing well since their return in 1990 to the World Cup stage.

Poland — by heart
Brazil — by marriage!
If the first one flops (which is usually the case) I get to put my “cors do Brasil” and enjoy tense family gatherings all the way to the finals!

If Ireland were in there it would be ecuador and ireland jointly but since they’re not and i’m a 1/16th spanish then it has to be spain. I also wouldn’t mind england doing well.
