What’s it Really Like in Ecuador Today?

June 16th, 2006 | By: Trent | 4 Comments »

Unfortunately, I’m writing this post from Somewhere That Isn’t Ecuador. I realize that this is my problem, not yours. I know from accounts that Ecuador is deliriously happy after a spot in the second round was secured. After all, it’s never happened in Eccuador’s history. And La Tri aren’t backing into the knockout stages–they currently lead hosts Germany in Group A.

My question: for those in Ecuador or those who have spoken to contacts in Ecuador, what’s it like? Has real life stopped? Is everyone insane with World Cup fever?

This struck me as pretty sweet:

“I’m so excited. I can’t believe it!” Carolina Aguilar exclaimed to her co-workers in a video shop — a morning beer in her hand and her gaze fixed on the TV screen.

Drinnking beer in the morning, as Ecuador defeats Costa Rica 3-0? Yeah, that’s a good way to start the day. Any day.

Let’s hear your stories.

Can’t tell you what it’s like in Ecuador today, but even in Brooklyn there is a bit of Ecuador fever that is going around.

Thanks for the link, JK. I, too, have been getting recognition wearing an Ecuador shirt–even at a bar in Kentucky!

Hello everybody!
Thanks for the chance of briefly telling you about our country. Ecuador is a small country(250000SqKm, 12Milliom people), every climate you would like to have: hot & humid in the coastal area, cold (08-25ºC) in Highlands, and hot temps in Jungle area (Amazon), high mountains above 6000masl) and the enchanted Galapagos Islands are ours. I will tell you more if you write me at rodrigo_aguirre@yahoo.com or please check this link out:

Anyway, I guess what you want to know now is the atmosphere we breath during the WorldCup. Yes, football definitely drive us crazy (in a good sense) since this is only our second time in the tournament (in more than 40 years) and going through the second round playing a neatty style football make us aim higher and honestly we believe we can go farther. Government let us have a break during office hours while playing the first match, but it did not happen for the second one. This was not a problem because most of entreprises let the employees have a break to watch in the morning and celebrate after office hours. Most of our our players come from negro-inhabitated zones and we all are proud of them as they tought us how to work with team spirit and discipline, which are the essence of this football team. Hugs from Quito.
