Walcott to Debut Against Ecuador?

June 23rd, 2006 | By: Trent | 9 Comments »

Seventeen-year-old England striker Theo Walcott may make his national team debut against Ecuador on Sunday. With England’s already-thin group of forwards made even thinner by Michael Owen’s injury, England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson may put in the young Arsenal man in the later stages of the match.

Of course, if he does make an appearance, you and Eriksson will have something in common–you’ll both be watching Walcott play for the first time.

If Walcott is the wunderkind Ericksson has made him out to be, he would have played him in the Sweden game. Aaron Lennon could be the big surprise on Sunday.

@ LLC – Really…you think leaving him on the bench for an entire World Cup will give him the boost and confidence that his career needs?

For anyone watching, I think it will be of great interest to see if and how Theo will play

I think it will be a huge mistake to bring on Theo Walcott, this lad has only played first division football he will find himself way out of his leauge. This move could knock his confidence and ruin his career.

On the contrary, Walcott may the best striker that England has at this stage. And I am sure he will score the crutial winning goal. No wonder Ericksson is saving him for a big occassion to surprise his opponents.

LLC, do you think Walcott should stay on the bench for the whole World Cup (barring an embergency of course)?

The bbc website has this comment from Ulises DLC speaking on Rooney:

“The fact he is not totally fit gives us a boost. Perhaps I can give his foot a kick to test it out.”

“I will certainly do my best to see if he is 100% fit or not.”

Good on you Ulises, show ‘em what you’re made of!!!

I hope Edison Mendez is able to play. This article from El Comercio seems to indicate otherwise.

Cristian Buitron – well, that’s not good news. I haven’t seen that story elsewhere, so I’ll wait to make a new post about it until then.

For everyone else, the article quote Coach Suarez as saying that he will use the same starting lineup as the first two games, unless Mendez is too injured to go.

No real further comment on the seriousness of the injury, but I’d bet he starts. We’ll see.
