Valencia Finds Supporters in the Oddest Places

July 6th, 2006 | By: Trent | 12 Comments »

Ecuador midfielder Luis Valencia is finding all sorts of support for his charge to win FIFA’s best young player award. I happen to think Valencia should win the award on merit.

But several sources here and there think it’s more important that Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo not win the award.

If you have an opinion and haven’t voted yet, do so here.

Maybe you think Ronaldo should win on merit. Or, maybe you have a sense of dignity and decency. Either way, vote!

Update: Some more fodder.

See, the temperature hits 20°C and the Canadians go crazy from the heat. You’re delirious, Jay, go back into your refrigerator.

Cristiano Ronaldo is a top talent… at crying. We’ll give him that award.

I really hope Valencia wins it, he deserves it. People could realize fair play & Team spirit are displayed to ensure some kind of advnatage(otherwise why bother?). Valencia is a gentlemen with a great head on his shoulders. One thing is important to realize, Ronaldo has 2 years on Valencia I beleive he is 22 and Valencia just turned 20. Now that he has WC under his belt his maturity and popularity will improve dramatically and he will be a star in no-time.

oops looks like I made a mistake Ronaldo is only 7 months older. Sill Ronaldo has a lot more time playing at a higher level in Europe something that Valencia will be just now doing in La Liga.

Keep it up, Trent. We might be quiet, but we read your posts.

About the post itself. I also agree that Valencia should win based on merit. Ronaldo is really fast and powerful, but definately tends to hog the ball. Valencia, on the other hand is a team player.

Trent,

FRZ said put it perfectly. i still log on religiously to this site, just can’t post like before (i was treading on thin ice with the boss and all) so don’t think we’ve jumped off the bandwagon or anything.

Jay, I’m going to Montreal this weekend so do me a favor and get off your ass and go straighten up the trailer, me and my friends are going to need a place to crash and relieve ourselves after the long drive.

There are still plenty of people who read this. I for one am glad you continued this blog instead of calling it quits, I want to know what happens to the Ecuadorian team.

I orginally supported Messi but I’m currently backing Valencia. Shame Ronaldo will probably win, even if he did play good for his last game.

Trent, please keep posting and ignore any ignorant, unnecessary comments like the one above. I am a huge ecuador fan but don’t speak any spanish so this is brilliant for keeping up with all the latest, especially the potentially exciting moves to europe. Valencia deserves this award so much more because he is a much more all-round player than ronaldo and because ronaldo is a vicious diver. We just need to watch out for the others on the list…

Keep it up, Trent! Ignore Jay’s stupid comment.

I voted for Valencia and I think he deserves it because he showed more maturity and more control in the whole WC. That’s merits a reward.

Dear Trent,
please ignore ignorant comments such as the first one written by our Canadian friend. I was on vacation in upstate NY and just got back. I was so happy to see that Valencia won (at least in electronic votes) the Best Young Player Award. I have been watching Cristiano Ronaldo and he is a great player but he is a very egotistical one at that. I have followed Valencia’s career for a while and he is a very humble, nice person. Furthermore, he is a gifted soccer player and he makes his team better by being a quality team player. Messi was also good but not enough to make a big difference. Rooney was also good but he is too much of a hot head. Podolski is also important but he needs to be spoon-fed goals by Klose. Whatever the final outcome I want to congratulate Valencia for this achievement. Bravo!
