Trent +10
By request from readers, here’s my “Trent +10”. Only players from the second-round teams were eligible.
Goalkeeper
Gianluigi Buffon: Sixteen saves, and only one (own) goal.
Defenders
John Terry: Solid work, and an awesome goal-line clearance against Trinidad & Tobago.
Ivan Hurtado: Only one goal conceded while he was on the pitch. Smoove.
Fabio Cannavaro: Again, only one goal conceded, and it was an own goal. Cannavaro is a solid defender.
Cafu: He may be 57 years old, but Brazil has conceded only one goal, and hey, he’s played in 19 World Cup matches now. That’s a lot, and deserves a mention.
Midfielders
Frank Ribery: Great young talent, great work against Spain. Very impressive.
Maxi Rodriguez: That goal against Mexico is good enough for me.
Maniche: He’s becoming a nice scoring threat for Portugal.
Trentinho: Incredible footwork and distribution skills. Also uncomfortably handsome. Hey, that’s why they call it “Trent +10”.
Forwards
Miroslav Klose: Frankly, I’m not a big fan, but it’s hard to argue with his output for the hosts.
Fernando Torres: I was impressed by the Atletico Madrid man, especially with his goal against Ukraine. It’s hard not to put Ronaldo here, of course, given his record-setting performance thus far, but them’s the breaks.
I’m going to be on the road for the next day or two. I’ll only be posting when I can, so I need you guys and girls to pick up the slack for me. Who is your “+10” roster from the tournament so far?

I like playing a more aggressive formation. The 442 is considered a defensive line-up while the 451 is more offensive. However, I like the line-up that Argentina uses on and off the 3322, which to me is a little more balanced and more offensive. Why cover 1 or 2 forwards with 4 0r 5 guys?
Buffon
Ayala
Puyol (My favorite player)
Marquez
Juan P Sorin
E. Tenorio (The best defensive midfielder we ever had, the guy is a machine) Although Emerson is pretty good too
Maxi Rodriguez
Figo (And on the bench Kaka and Riquelme)
Jose “El Principe” Morales (On the bench Decco and Ronaldinho)
Klose
Ronaldo (An on the bench C. Tenorio)

4-5-1 more offensive? Not so sure about that… you consider French and English football as is right now offensive? You find Brazil plays defensive with 4-4-2? Perhaps… It depends on the team. I find Argentina highly defensive with these boring volantes mixtos Maxi Rodriguez, Cambiasso and Mascherano all in at the same time… (although I think Mascherano is a fabulous player… more so, in my opinion than the other two…) in any case, notice what happened when they stuck in Aimar, and made it a real 3-3-2-2 line-up with Aimar and Riquelme feeding the forwards… Mexico had no chance in hell. Who knows why Argentina didn’t play like this earlier… they were being defensive and cautious, is my suspicion. Ecuador played defensive because their midfielders are all mixtos and because they were really concentrating on doing a good job, not letting easy goals in like they usually would in such competitions… And there aren’t really creative midfielders in Ecuador to begin with (it’s what’s missing!). But that is not the line-ups fault… Anyhow, this would be a cool line-up to play next to, I think:
Buffón
Ayala
Nesta
Thuram
Schweintseiger
Mascherano
Kaká
Riquelme
Robinho or Ronaldinho (if he wakes up!)
Leo (me)
Schevchenko (in a completely inept team, he’s done mostly everything and with a little better luck and had they not called him unjustly off-sides against Spain so much, that score would have been inverted!)

451 is considered more offensive if it is done properly.
Portugal uses a 451 and they attack constantly. Decco, Rolnado, Figo, and Maniche are all attacking midfielders, while Costinha is the only defensive midfielder. Brazil won the last cup with a 451. Rivaldo was more of an attacking midfielder than a forward.
The way some team, like England, use the 451 it is more defensive because the mixed midfielder don’t attack.

I don’t agree completely, but of course 451 can be, if you have good attacking midfielders, an offensive side. I still think the 451 Brazil that won last WC was shabby, to say the least, and this Portuguese team playing 451, Scolari style, has not yet impressed me as a progressive football machine either… I still think there are too many midfielders and they take away the space that a defender could create when coming up on attack. Plus, the extra midfielder is usually contention. I do agree Portugal has great players… But they were so bummed that with all the hype they had, they lost in the first round last WC, this time they play cautiously. So, that to me is a defensive attitude in general. But we’ll see. I truly hope you are right and Portugal destroys England with good driving football, during the game, and not waiting to go to penalties… that would be the worst!

I agree that penalties are a horrible way to settle a game.
I personally don’t like the 451, because like you said, too many midfielders that take away space.
.
I like the 3322 and the more traditional 442 when the two outside wingers go forward and attack. Like Cafu, Roberto Carlos and Sorin.

Penalties suck. How do you think Switzerland and Argentina were shamefully eliminated? The crappy penalties.
