This Week in Ecuador’s Top Flight

A round up of this weekend’s matches await you after the jump.

Espoli 2-3 Barcelona

Barcelona (de Guayaquil) continues its upward trajectory by defeating Espoli at the Estadio Guillermo Zambo Albornoz with two late goals from Derlis Florentin. After sitting last in the table for several weeks, Barcelona are now seventh in the table on goal differential. Espoli are still ninth out of ten.

Aucas 3-3 Olmedo

Olmedo withstood a nifty hat trick from Wilson Segura to save a point at the Estadio Chillogallo in Quito. Olmedo—World Cup Blog’s Bob’s absolute favorite team—remain in third place in the table, while Aucas now sit in eighth.

LDU Quito 3-2 Macara

LDU Quito regained the league lead—for now—when Robeto Palacios broke a 2-2 stalemate in the 68th minute against Macara, who now sit fourth in the table.

Emelec 0-0 Deportivo Quito

A scintillating scoreless draw at the George Capwell stadium. I guess I’ll be nice and designate this match a “defensive struggle”. D. Quito are now fifth in the table, while Emelec sit ahead of Guayas rival Barcelona only on goal differential.

Deportivo Cuenca — El Nacional

The late game of the weekend saw El Nacional follow up its recent Copa Libertadores humiliation with a 0-2 loss to Cuenca. Los Colorados, behind goals from Carlos Quiñónez (’30) and Roger Suárez (’47), are still at the bottom of the table.

Looks like a nice stadium. Am I reading this right that George Capwell was from the US?
