This Week in Ecuador’s National League
Below the fold, find out what happened in Ecuador’s serie A as LDU Quito opened a two-point lead on El Nacional, while Deportivo Cuenca…well, God bless Los Morlacos.
All ten teams were in action, beginning on Friday when Deportivo Quito came from behind to win at Deportivo Cuenca 2-1 behind goals from Fernando Hidalgo and Hernan Borderone. Deportivo Quito sit in sixth place on goal deferential, while Cuenca continue their disastrous form and are at the foot of the table.
Sunday, LDU Quito defeated Barcelona (de Guayaquil) with goals from Neicer Reasco and Ecuadorian international striker Augustin Delgado. It’s also worth noting that El Tin picked up a yellow card in the match. As noted, LDU Quito now sit alone atop the table, while once-mighty Barcelona languish in 9th with just six points.
Aucas and Macara played a nil-nil snoozer. Just so you know.
Emelec hosted Olmedo in a rockin’ George Capwell stadium, also on Sunday, winning 2-1 behind goals from Luis Rivera and Luis Escalado. Emelec and Olmedo each picked up a red card, which is always fun, and now sit in fifth and third place, respectively.
Finally, in a match that was scheduled for Sunday but postponed due to rain until today, Espoli drew 1-1 with El Nacional. The one point left El Nacional in second place, two points behind LDU Quito. Espoli still sit in eighth place.
Folks, you don’t get English-language breakdowns of Ecuador league games on just any website. Yay for World Cup Blog!
Update: For a look at the teams in the top flight check this out.
Hi Bob, there are two teams that hold most of the national team players, here’s the list:
Mora, Reasco, Espinoza, Ambrossi, Mendez, Urrutia, Delgado, Salas (injured) all come from LDU the most important team in the last ten years. Lara, Borja, Quiroz come from El Nacional, which allows only Ecuadorians to play in the team.
So these 2 teams can certainly be considered the powerhouses in Ecuador. Barcelona used to be the top team but they haven’t won anything in almost 10 years.

Thanks Andres. I’d love to go to Ecuador some day and see these teams in person.
That’s right, Andres. LDU Quito should provide nearly half of the starters in Germany. I’ll post a rundown of all of the premier league’s teams soon.

For those of us who are too lazy to find out and/or learn Spanish, can you give a rundown on which are the traditional powerhouses in the Ecuador league and if there are any teams in particular that feature a lot of the players we’ll see at the World Cup.
Gracias
