The Cradle of Ecuador Football
The El Chota Valley, less than 200 km north of the capital city of Quito, is one of the poorer regions of Ecuador. The hardscrabble life of most of the region’s inhabitants, however, has been somewhat softened by the fact that so many of Ecuador’s footballing stars hail from El Chota. In fact, World Cup players Augustin Delgado, Ulises de la Cruz, Giovanni Espinosa, and Edison Mendez all call El Chota home. In 2002, seven of La Tri’s players did the same. Follow the link for a nice story on the footballing heritage of El Chota.

Trent,
AWESOME find. It was exactly the point I was trying to get across in response to a previous post.

yes an excellent article. Thanks for providing it. It used to be Guayaquil and Esmeraldas that produced many of Ecuador’s footballers but now as the article states it is El Chota Valley where many are coming from. As in other nations, it is poverty that often is a driving force.

Yeah, good point Martin. In many countries, the top-class player NOT from a poorer background is the exception. Who knows if a midle-class existance could have produced a Maradona?
