Suarez and Parreira Disagree on Altitude
Even though La Tri have done remarkably better in the high altitude of Quito than at sea level, Ecuador Coach Luis Suarez dimisses the famed altitude as a negative factor. Suarez says: “High altitude is not the main factor [in Ecuador's recent success]. If that were the case, we would have always qualified for the World Cup.” Hmm. Good point.
But count Brazil coach Alberto Parreira among the critics: “Ecuador qualified by winning their games at altitude,” said Parreira in the same article. Of course the population of Brazil is 15 times that of Ecuador’s, so I guess different countries have different advantages. Right, Alberto?

That whooping Brasil took 18 months ago must still be eating up Parreira. He reminds me of those Met fans that scream “Yankees suck” at Shea Stadium. He needs to be more concerned about what Brazil’s going to do at the Big Dance and less worried about how Ecuador got there (For the record, we got there in a Hummer limo).
We used to play our qualies in Guayaquil, but I’m still not convinced it’s the altitude that’s reaped better results. It’s more the attitude” of the people. The Ecua people were a lot more selective, if you know what I mean, up until the mid 90s. But thank God they seem past that, at least on a footballing level.
Besides, if I were an opposing team I’d take the altitude over a raucous, riot-prone crowd any day.
P better wear a diaper if Ecuador advances cos he just might be eating
