Starting XI Remains the Same
Luis Suarez will use the same starting lineup against Costa Rica that he employed against the Poles. After some murmuring to the contrary, Suarez is using the old ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’ approach.
Assuming Suarez uses the same lineup, Ecuador will look like this on Thursday:
Mora
De la Cruz, Espinoza, Hurtado, Reasco
Méndez, E. Tenorio, Castillo, Valencia
C. Tenorio, Delgado

Hi
will Ecuador try to beat CostaRica or they will be happy with 1 point? What do you think about CostaRica?

Hi, michelle. I think Ecuador will definitely try for the three points. A draw would not eliminate them, but if Ecuador were able to beat Costa Rica…and if Germany beat Poland…then Ecuador will qualify for the second round without needing to get a result against hosts Germany.

I agree with Trent. CR will come out with guns blazing while Ecuador will look to pounce on misplayed balls and counter-strike. A draw would be a major disappoint compared to the result against Poland.
Glad to see Coach Suarez is sticking with the tried-and-true XI from Friday. Only Mendez seems shaky; I think he got too used to playing off the flanks at La Liga and is a little out of sorts with the seleccion’s formation. Against CR a speedster like Larita or Saritama would be a suitable replacement, but knowing Suarez he’ll probably go with Urrutia.

I think they should put kaviedes as a midfielder, i think he’ll play really good in valencia’s spot. what do you think trent?

I think Mendez will play. If not, the best replacement will be Lara. If he plays, let’s hope that he can deliver.

Orlando Pasto: I think Kaviedes could make a pretyty good attacking midfielder. My only worry is that he hasn’t been training for that at all.
I think Mendez will start; I think Suarez makes up his mind a lot earlier than he lets on, and that the starters (and even one or two of the subs) are known to him well in advance.

Valencia’s been playing solid since the Colombia friendly. He was clowning those boys but no one up front could finish the job.
Kaviedes def. would play well in Valencia’s spot but LAV’s been a lot more dedicated to the cause than JIK, so unless something happens (God forbid) to Valencia, Kaviedes will have to wait in line.

I agree, Dar. And at any rate, Kaviedes has (at least so far) shown that he can come on as a sub and make some noise.

I think we need to set the right tone from the start. I’d like to handcuff Costa Rica and not let them breath. No, i’m not talking about using tactics from Guantanamo Bay but I don’t want the ‘Ticos’ to dictate the pace of the game. Therefore, having a player like Lara and/or Kaviedes start would be a smart move. Come on Ecuador si se puede! Si se puede!
