Starting Lineups From Today

A look at the starting lineups from Ecuador’s 0-3 loss to Germany.

Ecuador
Cristian Mora
Jorge Guagua, Ulises de la Cruz, Paul Ambrossi, Geovanny Espinoza
Luis Antonio Valencia (Lara, 63′), Edwin Tenorio, Marlon Ayovi (Urrutia, 68′), Edison Mendez
Felix Borja (Benitez, 46′), Ivan Kaviedes

Germany
Jens Lehmann
Arne Friedrich, Robert Huth, Per Mertesacker, Philipp Lahm
Torsten Frings (Borowski, 66′), Bernd Schneider (Asamoah, 73′), Bastian Schweinsteiger, Michael Ballack
Miroslav Klose (Neuville, 66′), Lukas Podolski

Ecuador coach Luis Suarez decided to sit his top defensive and offensive players today for reasons ranging from injury to yellow card worries. And it showed. A lot.

Up front, with Delgado and C. Tenorio on the bench, Borja and Kaviedes just didn’t get it done. Borja especially seemed absent the entire first half, and he was subbed at the 46th-minute mark. Kaviedes, who I though had done well as a sub in the first two games, doesn’t function as well without another top-flight striker up top.

In defense, captain and yellow-card holder Ivan Hurtado was also held out of the match. the defense, while obviously not as tanelted without Hurtado and Reasco, was also in disarray at times.

The good news is, Hurtado, C. Tenorio and Delgado should be rested and ready to face England or Sweden this weekend.

Looks very much like we will need it agaist England. Cant afford to loose out on any of the big players - though i find Urrutia is good enough for a starter post.

P.S.: Thanks, Trent for this Website - am checking and reading everyday. Please keep it coming - very much appreciated!

Agreed, Borja look lost and he and Kaviedes never connected. The biggest difference I thought was in the back, we just didn’t look solid at all. What a difference Bam Bam makes.

I agree, FRZ. Hurtado is this team’s MVP, even though the strikers have been getting most of the attention.

But, it’s always that way, isn’t it? :)

Fellow Ecuas,

Tough game today. I’ve had a little bit of time to reflect, analyze, cry like a 6th grade school girl… Here are my thoughts.

Starting with todays subs Ambrossi, Guagua, Ayovi, Borja and Kaviedes. No one impressed at all. I actually think they stepped the level of play one notch down.
-Guagua was slow to react and did not mark very well.
-Ayovi just looked lost and did not do very well to create anything. Also, gave the ball up way to many times.
-Ambrossi played with heart but he’s just to small and not skilled enough to create.
-Borja, wow he didn’t get many touches and the few he did get. He didn’t do much with.
-Kaviedes played ok but didn’t have anyone to pass to and could not create.

The sub that did make a difference was Lara man he is quick but being so small doesn’t match up very well against the Germany defense. Though, overall I think he played well.

Benitez and Urrutia came in later and were pretty much non factors.

The one player that I want to see become more involed is Mendez he is creative, sends some great long balls and has a rifle for a boot. However, he never seems to put it all together. He played ok but i relly thought he would step and take more leadership and help to control things in the middle.

I don’t know guys am I smoking cr*** or is this a good assesment? I was hoping for a much more competitie game.

E4L - I think you’re right on with your analysis. The subs just didn’t get it done. Maybe asking them to perform against Germany in Germany in the WC is a tall order, but they’ve got to do better.

Kaviedes is odd to me. He really had some nice plays when coming in as a sub, but he doesn’t have what it takes to create stuff on his own. not against the Germanys and Englands of the world, anyway.

Finally, good points re: Mendez. For long stretches of the game, I never see or hear from Mendez unless he’s taking a free kick. Valencia was ok, but without a good strikeforce up front, it was mostly for naught.

Hi Alexis,

Not sure if you caught the game but if you did then you would of seen that he was actually pretty effective. The one thing that does concern me is his size he’s only 5′3″ so yes he is hard to catch but some of these European players are big and fast! However, he was quite a aparkplug off the bench

the russian arbiter is the most incompetent arbiter in the world. the game was just an embarrassment. since ecuador has to move on, it just could not pick up the ball and go home. i wonder who is running fifa. this shows again how imcompetence can hurt talented professionals.

Mora was not at fault in any of the goals and he played well throughout the game. There were a lot of poor passes made by Kaviedes and Borja, and de la Cruz had his worst game.
