Segundo Castillo to Red Star Belgrade

August 31st, 2006 | By: Trent | 4 Comments »

Ecuador international Segundo Alejandro Castillo is headed to Serbian powerhouse Red Star Belgrade.

Apparently the 24-year-old has had several offers from European clubs, but Red Star offered the most money.

So far, the World Cup run has really meant a great deal to several Ecua stars. Who do you think should also merit some European attention?

wow congrats to Castillo. Seems like our players are milking the WC experience!

There are a bunch of other players that have the potential to play in Europe and it’s just a matter of time before they make the leap across the pond. A lot of them didn’t even make it onto the World Cup Squad but with the help of the Copa Sudamerica and upcoming friendlies they might help promote themselves.

Guys from the Seleccion like La Sombra Espinoza, Edwin Tenorio and Paul Ambrossi are long overdue to play somewhere in Europe. La Sombra has the strength and speed to play anywhere while Tenorio is a stalwart in the midfield; complete with the brutish strength and bad attitude he’s somewhat of a poor man’s Roy Keane.

Lesser-known players that I think would make it in Europe are guys like El Mago Salas, Moises Candelario and Jhonny Baldeon. Salas was poised for a move to Italy until a knee injury purged that. Candelario has a heavy foot and can shoot from wayyy outside the box, while J-Boy’s been tearing it up at Barcelona.

Several guys from el Nacy have either played or flirted with playing overseas. Klever Chala was in Europe for a while and Ebelio Ordonez played in the Middle East but neither made a big splash. Guys like Walter Ayovi and David Quiroz are capable boys, if not the most level-headed.

I’d like to see Salas and Espinoza land somewhere as well. As for Baldeon, to be honest I was glad when he didn’t make the WC team, but he’s been rolling this season.

From Soccernet:

Defensive midfielder Castillo, who has scored one goal in 14 appearances for Ecuador and played for them in the 2006 World Cup, was delighted with his own move.

‘I want to live up to the expectations of the people who placed their faith in me here I hope to win many trophies with Red Star,’ he said.
