RIP: Ecuador Legend Alberto Spencer
As you all know by now, Ecuador football legend Alberto Spencer has passed away at the age of 68. Most famously, Spencer scored an incredible 54 goals in the Copa Libertadores while playing for Barcelona de Guayaquil and Penarol of Uruguay. That’s still a record.
Oddly, Spencer played international matches for both Ecuador and Uruguay. And although Spencer never played in a World Cup, he was able to watch Ecuador during its historic run at Germany 2006.
As was pointed out in the comments here, the fact that Spencer was black–and so incredibly talented–helped to open eyes of non-black footbal fans in South America, for the better.
After the jump, a video tribute to Spencer.

My full condolences to Spencer’s family, friends and country.
The Tri had a good World Cup appearance, they sure tired out at the end to England, who just edged them.
