Poland Lose Friendly to Colombia

May 30th, 2006 | By: Trent | 5 Comments »

Ecuador Group A foe Poland have dropped a friendly match 1-2 to Colombia. Goals by Murillo and Martinez were enough to hold off the Poles, who were paced by Ireneusz Jelen’s 90th minute goal. To my mind, this result raises two questions.

First, does anyone want to win Group A? Ecuador lost to Macedonia on Sunday 1-2; Costa Rica got hammered by the Ukraine 4-0 on Saturday and lost to the Czechs today 1-0. Now Poland loses to Colombia. Germany beat up on poor Luxembourg, but the hosts’ troubles are well-documented.

Second, is Colombia the best team in Group A? Sure, they aren’t in the World Cup, but they’ve already drew Ecuador and beat Poland. (For good measure, Colombia beat Costa Rica at the 2004 Copa America.) Colombia faces Germany later this week. A win there and I say they should be given a spot in the knockout stages.

Not really.

Update: Chuck and others, Bob has the video of Martinez’ goal. It’s really a must-see.

“Goals by Murillo and Martinez were enough to hold off the Poles…”

This sentence makes it sound like a ho-hum, run of the mill occurance… Colombia got a goal from this guy and a goal from that guy…

But… Colombia’s second goal was actually scored by their goalie (Martinez)… ( ! )

True enough…but Bob was all over that detail on the front page.

Anyway, it certainly was an unusual goal.

Very well. I brought it up just in case you didn’t realize it…

I hope I get to see the goal in a highlight somewhere.

You point, though, in your post, is a good one: Does anyone want to wind Group A?

If the friendlies are any indication (and we know that’s a big “if”), then Group A should be pretty wide open. I would be surprised if Germany became the first host *not* to advance to the 2nd round, but any team seems capable of winning the group.

I’m with you; I’d love to see a clip of the goal. Hopefully some kind soul will post it on YouTube later today.

[...] Colombia 2 – Poland 1 …who not only lost to Colombia at home, but also conceded a goal to Colombia’s keeper Luis Martinez. Poland fielded mainly a reserve unit, which received mocking cheers from the home crowd. Poland’s run up to the World Cup hasn’t exactly been smooth, a common theme for the teams in Group A…. [...]
