Mora Still the Man

May 31st, 2006 | By: Trent | 7 Comments »

Not that this should be a surprise, but it seems goalkeeper Cristian Mora still has the confidence of Ecuador coach Luis Suarez.

Mora looked a little shaky to me during the Colombia friendly on May 24, but Edwin Villafuerte did himself no favors during the match against Macedonia.

Mora made his international debut last year in a friendly against Italy, and when he saved that penalty kick to preserve the win, I think he cemented his starting place in Germany this summer.

Update: Thanks to reader leo, we have this article saying that maybe Villafuerte could be the starter after all. Oy.

Leave it to the Ecuadorian press!!
The one and most questioned position to be filled with a starter is at goalie. It seems that Suarez finally made a decision going with Villafuerte as the ecuadorian press is claming. http://www.eluniverso.com/2006/05/31/1126/f7cc20707afe484385db00393ee65805.html?EUID=

I think Mora is the more athletic of the 2 and I would rather take him ahead of Villafuerte. Either way I don’t think goaltending will be one of our strong suits in the World Cup

Hey Trent,

Thought I’d litter your comments. The Lego collection would be comically huge if I had more money to spend on it, right now they’re just comically prominent if you walk around my house.

Denmark definetly did not deserve to be in this World Cup, it seems the only bright spot is their consistent manhandling of Israel, which several stories are quick to point out. This is coming from someone who is like 90 percent Danish.

I’m loving your blog, I have Ecuador down as the dark horse of the tourney thanks mostly to the confidence of Mora, so don’t let them let me down.

I’d stick with Mora in net because he is athletic and has the potential to make the crazy saves (… and make some routine saves look crazy) so at the very least we will be on the edge of our seats.

If Mora can get momentum, he could carry Ecuador a long way in the tournament I think/hope.

Mora can become a better goalkeeper cuz of his confidence and attitude. Villafuerte really sucked against Macedonia. Mora with a little more experience, can overcome any goalkeeper obstacles.

We need to beef him up a little bit. It is impossible to do it for the world cup but that should be the goal keepers trainer’s goal for him.
