La Banana Mecánica

Ecuador’s World Cup success has earned it several new nicknames from the international press. The team came into the tournament as “La Tricolor”, but another name may stick as well. My personal favorite is “La Banana Mecánica”

Challenge: say “La Banana Mecánica” without smiling. Good luck.

(In case you didn’t know, Ecuador exports more bananas than any other country. Also, their home kits are yellow.)

La Banana Mecanica! Clockwork Banana! I love it!

I think since the condor is our national bird and it looks so majestic flying over our peaks, Ecuador’s team should be nicknamed “The Ecuadorian Condors”, like Ivory Coast’s “Elephants”, or Angola’s “Black Impalas”. I think “The Condors” denotes a high flying-elegant bird. By the way, the condor has the longest wingspan than any other flying bird and they have a certain mystique even when they die because when they sense themselves too old, condors fly as high as they can and then they let themselves fall to the ground. Oh yeah and a condor is also what you see as part of the emblem of Ecuador’s jersey. Just a thought. :)

Ecuadorian Condors……………

I’ll meet your challenge and say “banana mecánica” without smiling. It reinforces one of the most widespread and terrible stereotypes regarding Latin American countries.

Hrm. Well, arcturus, I hear you. And I’m generally sensitive to the Banana Republic canard.

In this case, I didn’t feel like the press (including the Ecuadorian press) was being racist or unnecessarily insensitive to Ecuaas and their economic culture. I could be wrong, of course.

Either way, I appreciate your comment and hope you continue reading World Cup Blog. Thanks!

The condor is not a nice bird. Most of the people I know in Ecuador hate that the condor is our national birds.

The condor is a huge Vulture, which are scavenging birds, feeding mostly from carcasses of dead animals. With so many beautiful birds in our country, why did we pick the one that eats dead animals?

The condor has always been known to be in the vulture family but it is a beautifully regal bird and when it is flying with the Andes mountains as a backdrop. One is in awe when looking at the jaw-dropping eleven foot wingspan. As far as people in Ecuador not liking the bird as our symbol is nonsense. I grew up in Ecuador and throughout all my life this bird has always been considered as a revered symbol of our Andean nature, resilience and thriving in a tough environment…just like our national soccer team. “The Ecuadorian Condors are flying high in Germany!”
