Ecuador Coach Luis Suarez has announced the 18 players that will head to Japan later this month for the friendly match in Oita. There are some new/surprising names here, including Ivan Kaviedes, Edwin Tenorio, Gustavo Figueroa and Juan Trivino. The full list after the jump.
Goalkeepers:
Cristian Mora (Liga de Quito)
Edwin Villafuerte (D.Quito)
Backs:
Néicer Reasco (Liga de Quito)
Juan Triviño (Emelec)
José Luis Perlaza (Olmedo)
Giovanni Espinoza (Liga de Quito)
Paúl Ambrossi (Liga de Quito)
Midfield:
Marlon Ayoví (D.Quito)
Edwin Tenorio (Barcelona)
Patricio Urrutia (Liga de Quito)
Leonardo Soledispa (Barcelona)
Luis Fernando Saritama (D.Quito)
Edison Méndez (Liga de Quito)
Antonio Valencia (Recreativo de Huelva)
Forwards:
Johnny Baldeón (Barcelona)
Gustavo Figueroa (El Nacional)
Jaime Iván Kaviedes (Argentinos Juniors)
Walter Calderón (D.Cuenca)
Excepting Gustavo Figueroa, Suarez did not call up any players from El Nacional because they will have a Copa Libertadores match that same week. Only Valencia and that international man of mystery, Ivan Kaviedes, were called into action from teams outside of Ecuador. Finally, LDU Quito striker Augustin Delgado was left out of the slection due to the length of the trip. El Tin has only recently recovered from an injury.

What’s the deal with Kaviedes? Is he one of those talented players who is a bit of a head case?

You got it, Bob. Ecuador fans either badly want Kaviedes to shape up and make this summer’s team, or they are already at the stage where they have given up on his antics for this go-round. He is very talented, to be sure, and would really help La Tri in Germany. If he can hold it together that is. The trip to Japan should be an interesting test.
