Group A Update: Germany

April 7th, 2006 | By: Trent | 3 Comments »

It looks as if Ecuador will be trying to beat Jens Lehmann instead of Oliver Kahn when they face Germany this summer in World Cup Group A action. The truth is, they’re both still great ‘keepers, and this choice won’t mean that much for La Tri.

PS: This article hints that it was a mistake that Kahn made in the friendly against the US that sealed his no. 2 position. He did make a mistake on the American’s lone goal, but the game was well out of reach and it all seemed sort of flukely to me. And at any rate, he did make an unbelievable save on a US header when the match was still in doubt. Eh, whatever.

To be honest, I think this is great news for Ecuador. I believe the best German keeper is Timo Hildebrand and I think Oliver Kahn brings a certain confidence or mystique to the German side that Lehmann doesn’t (see WC 2002). Although Lehmann is on-form for Arsenal right now, it will be interesting to see how he does with Huth as first-choice centre-back.

Huge mistake, Kahn is the best damn goalkeeper from recent times, he makes Chilavert look like shit, I just hope he doesnt quit the team before the cup, his motto is “never give up”, well I hope he lisent to himself on that one.

This decision wasn’t made on that one Game against the US-Team. They had a race for nr.1 ever since Klinsmann was made national-coach, Lehmann just played a better season with Arsenal compared to Kahn with Bayern Munich, both are still atleast Top 15 in the World when it come to Goalkeepers.
This decision really doesn’t matter for germanys World Cup opponents because both goalies are great players. But what is a good Keeper with a weak defense ? We’ll see
