Gordon Strachan on El Tin

June 24th, 2006 | By: Trent | 1 Comment »

No article in England about Ecuador can fail to mention (a) the scoring threat of Agustin Delgado and (b) Delgado’s failed stay at then-EPL side Southampton. Former Southampton manager Gordon Strachan talks about his days with El Tin on England’s southern coast.

Strachan recounts the trials and tribulations of working with Tin, and how even though he had obvious skill, the Ecuador striker simply didn’t want to be England.

I heard Tin’s physiotherapist talking about visiting Delgado in the UK. He said Tin was definately depressed and didn’t want to be there.

It sounded to me like your classic case of culture shock, compounded by a knee injury, and the fact that he was there alone. His family did not go with him to England.

Oh well, that’s history now. We are all glad he came back to Ecuador and relaunched his career.
