George Capwell, Pioneering…American?
As inquired about here, Emelec of the Ecuadorian premier division plays its home matches in Estadio George Capwell in Guayaquil, the nation’s largest city. Who is George Capwell, you ask? Oddly enough, George Capwell was an American immigrant who helped found one of the country’s most popular football clubs.
Capwell came to Ecuador to work on infrastructure with the Emprese Electrica del Ecuador (Electric Company of Ecuador). In 1929 Capwell, along with other managers and employees of the company, helped to found a sporting club named after his company. Thus EMpresa ELectrica del ECuador was born. Although it was initially a boxing and basball club, it soonn grew to be known for its football team.

Surely our Emelec readers can add some cool team info in the comments section!
Update: Estadio Capwell is undergoing some remodeling as we speak, which should be finished by April 15, just in time for the next classico derby against cross-town rivals Barcelona (de Guayaquil).

[...] Emelec gets it odd name from it’s early days of representing the EMpresa ELectrica del ECuador. Electrcity is still a theme of the club. Barcelona gets its familiar moniker from the fact the club, although founded by Ecuadorians, was originally financed by Spanish immigrants from Catalonia. The club was named after their favorite team from back home. [...]
