Full Time: Ecuador 0-1 Brazil

July 4th, 2007 | By: Trent | 28 Comments »

That’s it folks. An incredibly disappointing tournament for La Tricolor. It will be interesting to see the fall out from these three matches. On the whole, I think the team played better tonight than in the last game. Obviously, too little too late. More to come of course.

Robinho’s hilarious dive in the box puts Brazil up 1-0 in the 56th minute.

No score at the half. Brazil threatening at the end of the first stanza, with Lil Robbie just missing to the right.

No chance at qualification, but a win would still mean a lot heading into the WC qualifiers, both for el equipo and for the DT’s job!

The official starting line-up for La Tricolor is after the jump.

12 - Christian MORA
3 - Iván HURTADO
4 - Ulises DE LA CRUZ
5 - Patricio URRUTIA
6 - Pedro QUIÑONEZ
7 - David QUIRÓZ
10 - Felipe CAICEDO
13 - Renán CALLE
20 - Edwin TENORIO
21 - Carlos TENORIO
22 - Pablo PALACIOS

I have to admit, I was surprised to see this lineup when it was announced. I thought for sure LFS would stick to his guns.

THe defense improved and the goalie exceeded my expectations. The big issue for us is definition. WE are not able to get a goal. We approach the perimeter but cant get it in. I think this line up was superior than the first game against Chile. Guagua played better than Hurtado. Reasco was sleep! I dont know why he did not hustle. Benitez was awesome. He deserves alot of recognition as well as the Sombra.

Do you guys think Suarez is going to sacked? Most of the commentators are expecting it.

Lets see what happens.

Hmmm I don’t know about Suarez getting sacked, I mean ok we lost the three games but look where he has brought us too we were in touch with some world class sides and I wouldn’t be sacking him too quickly unless it is for a latino coach of great calibre…I like how Suarez sees common sense and makes changes even if they are a little too late…but at least he made them :P and as far as im concerned we can only get better from this, you also have to take into account this is our first major tournament since the WC with our players coming back together with new styles of play from all their clubs and like the old saying goes “Rome wasn’t built in a day” :D so until next time guys…. Adios :D

I hope suarez does get sacked, he has done well in the past but we need a change. I also don’t understand his thinking with in yesterdays game if we need to win by 2 against Brasil, why not have 3 strikers on the field. Should have press the issue, leave it all on the field

Mora and Hurtado should have never started the first 2 games

Elizaga should have been the goalie from the beginning of the tournament, Mora could learn a lot from him.

Major newspapers and some people on this blog are saying that Ecuador played much better, showed courage, just couldn’t score. Were we watching the same game? Ecuador’s defense (read goalie) improved a lot. But what happened on the attack? Ecuador was playing like a tie would be good enough.

I’d like to see the stats, but I think we created less goal possibilities yesterday than in other games.

I think Ecuador went out trying not to screw up, but not really thinking they could ever beat Brazil 2-0. After the ridiculous penalty given to Brazil that mind-set was even more evident.

At least we saw Suarez giving directions and showing emotion. Would’ve liked to see that during the last 20 minutes of the game against Chile.

Ecuador played better then brazil for much of the game, the ref blew it with that penatly shot. And they should have started with the 3 strikers, borja should have scored on the empty net, i know the angle was difficult, but hes a striker he should be able to score. After ecuador went down, i some players not even trying as hard as they did in the first half. Did u think Super Teno took a dive or should he have been giving the penatly shot. Overall i like the fact they played good in the tournment, they should have won against chile, and mexico they could have tied. Also were the refs out to get them, there was some questionable calls against ecuador.

kn,
You are so right but the hope is that we get better and bring in new talent. Suarez is scouting around and supposendly looking at 50 Ecuadorean players. I think we need someone like TIn who can get a goal in. I like the defense and Elizaga. It is a shame we could not do better or earlier. I blame Suarez for that. He should have put Guagua from the beginning.

THe bright side was that this blog got interesting and at times comical.

Leon, youre right but… looking at 50 Ecuadorian players aint gonna do it. What he thinking? What about the young talents we have now?????????? Dont he get it? We do have a good team and we’ll have an even better one if we USE YOUNGER PLAYERS!! That why Chile and Mexico and Paraguay do well. The young players that get experience and then move to big teams later. Man I hope Fernando Guerrero and Deixon Mendez are ready in a year because we need a revolution in the seleccion.

Kevin,
i agree with you on the young players. I wasnt that impressed with Guerrero last year but he did very well in Real Madrid - B team. Deixon Mendez is a player to watch.

I will be in Ecuador end of july and I hope to see some local games.
Bye I am watching Argentina vs Paraguay

Well I knew from the beginning that we weren’t going to pass the second round, but let this be a lesson to Ecuador. If Ecuador doesn’t step up there is no world cup 2010. Elizaga did a very good job of goal keeping and he should start from now on. The defence is improving by taking out Hurtado and putting in guagua. Espinoza and Bagui did play A LOT BETTER, but i would rather take them out and put in Renad Calle or Paul Ambrossi. In the qualifying matches of the world cup we should try out one of the young stars like i metioned before. I would rather want felipe caicedo to start instead of tenorio because i think tenorio does better in the second half.

Kevin,
It is amazing but I agree with you with everything except the comment on Ambrossi. I dont think he can keep up with the tempo. I do like Calle and I am surprised that Suarez did not call him up.

Felipe is 18 years old and he definitely would be better than tenorio.

Leon,
Thanks for agreeing with me except with Ambrossi, i think he would probably do a better job than Giovanny Espinoza. I think they do play different positions but they should still try him.

I kind of like Bagui in the seleccion because he maintains a much more defensive position than Neicer. That helps alot. Ambrossi is not bad but he needs a lot more work. I heard hes been playing well for Liga though.

La Sombra is someone you cant keep out. You keep la sombra out, you lose your defence. Yeah he makes mistakes but remember the Germany 06 games against Poland, Costa Rica, and England. Oh man, he played like Roberto Ayala there.

You take out Sombra Espinoza and Ecuador’s defence see its level fall considerable. I agree.. In the WC games, La Sombra played like o Roberto Ayala, or any other defence phenomenon… (the performance against England and Rooney was heroic)
