Fallout: Ecuador 1-1 Peru

September 8th, 2006 | By: Trent | 4 Comments »

Thanks for all of those readers who left their initial impressions of the match below. Ecuador more or less played a second-string team against a decent Peru A side. Ecuador’s lineup and some video highlights after the jump.

Mora
Montano (Perlaza 90′), Guagua, Espinoza, Ambrossi
Soledispa, E. Tenorio, Kaviedes (Ladines 87′), Urrutia (Aguirre 81′)
F. Caicedo (Paredes 70′), Benitez (Salas ‘75)

Nice goal by Benitez; but what’s with Guagua taking the penalty? Sure, he’s got a stout leg, but was he the best choice out there?

Finally, I was a little suprised at the low turnout and the fact that, according to reader Dar, Peruanos outnumbered Ecuas 2-1. On the whole, though, it sounds like LFS was right to use the contest as a testing ground for some young guns. In particular, I’m looking forward to seeing Felipe Caicedo come into his own.

hey trent,

just a few thoughts:

aguirre was actually on the left side, not ambrossi. they look really alike but aguirre is taller and lankier. he’s also got longer hair. ambrossi came in a little later.

you’re right, guagua was the wrong person to put on the spot. initially kaviedes stepped to the line but a few of the boys talked things over and i guess the tribe spoke and it was decided guagua would take the shot. BAD decision. i would have gone with tenorio or kaviedes.

attendance was announced as 20,000 but it could have been less. peruvians outnumbered us badly but the stadium was so empty and the tension was so poorly contrived that things were a bit anticlimatic. i was def more worked up against colombia.

last thing: Caicedo is living up to the hype. i don’t remember him doing much against italy a few years back but last night he made some classy passes (including the one that set up C-Ben) and was always cutting and looking to get open. kind of the opposite of what kaviedes was doing.

Excellent game, very simply Ecuador’s defense gave a little too much room in the second half.

After the 10th minute, their first half pressure was insurmountable by Peru. The frustration was evident throughout the stadium (yes there were definitely more Peruvians there…you know they do have something to prove)

But I did not see the same energy in the second half from Ecuador. I thought 10 played horribly. Terrible passing, terrible shots. He had a few great chances and either flubbed them or kicked the ball right into the goalie’s gut, even with the entire goal in front of him.

I also thought the substitution to bring 15 in was bad. He came in very cold and gave up the ball 3 times before getting warmed up.

All in all, there would have been more people there if the seats were cheaper, otherwise, next time, I’m tempted to stay in Jackson Heights to catch the game.

hey mike good points. i think no. 15 was salas, and no. 10 i believe is kaviedes? salas is used to making things happen quick but i think he expected too much of himself this time. and kaviedes sends lead passes so far forward that his teammates could only get to if they were on crack. he and benitez put a few shots straight into the hands of the peruvian goalie. JIK did have one shot bounce off the goal post though.

i think part of the reason the stadium was empty was because you didn’t have families at the game this time around. most men thought this would be one of those “leave the women and children at home” kind of matches when thankfully it wasn’t.

Thanks for you thoughts, guys. Dar, I think you’re right that Kaviedes really shines at that position when there is at least one hardcore striker with him on the pitch. He came on to play great at the WC, but against Germany he looked fairly lost to me when he didn’t have Tin or Super Teno up there.
