Emelec v. Barcelona Suspended Due to Violence

As Nina Simone once said, “Bet you thought I was kiddin’.” We’ve shown here, here and here how passionate and crazy the Clasico del Astillero (Shipyard Derby) can be. Tonight’s Emelec v. Barcelona derby, Ecuador’s most important rivalry match, was suspended until tomorrow at noon due to a violent outburst from a minority of the visiting Barcelona fans. Why the violence? Who’s to say, although I think it may have to do with the humiliating 3-0 beating Emelec was in the middle of administering. For the record, Ecuador Blog is all about intense rivalries. But fan violence? Not cool.

I agree with you, E4L. It’s a real downer.
Bob, I have some pics to post later, but I haven’t been able to get video yet. It’ll pop up eventually.

Barclona SC (Sporting Club??) of Ecuador. That is hillareous. Just a slight resemblance to the emblem of the other, lesser known Barcelona FC…I think of Spain or Portugal..one of those.

soze–Barcelona’s name reflects the favorite team of the club’s original financiers, who were Spanish. Ditto the club shield.

Trent…I tell ya, you learn a new thing every day. Thank you for clarifying.

Barcelona SC are just such a mess now. Poor management of the club and now the fans running wild at Emelec’s Capwell Stadium. It is sad to see how Ecuador’s biggest and most well supported club has fallen.
By the way, Emelc’s stadium George Capwell is named after an American who was a director with the club (and an oficial with Ecuador’s electric co., which Emelec is named after.) That might be one of the few, if only, futbol stadiums outside of the US named after an American.

If the name and shield are transferable between countries and clubs…I wonder if they can do the same with the players?…That would be nice huh?
