Emelec v. Barcelona Is Finally Over
A day after it was suspended due to fan violence, Emelec today defeated archrival Barcelona in the 169th edition of the Shipyard Derby. Yesterday, with Emelec leading 3-0, violence broke out in the stands amongst some of the Barcelona supporters. They broke off some of the infrastructure of the stadium and threw it onto the pitch. One projectile struck a linesman, causing the referee to suspend the match. General mayhem ensued, and several sources are noting that the police presence and reaction was entirely insufficient.
The replay started today at noon local time, in front of a crowd of zero. You can’t blame the officials for not wanting to risk another dust-up. No word yet on how Barcelona will be punished for the behavior of the troublemakers in yellow.
Perversely, Barcelona nearly got a result today, even though there were only 39 minutes left to be played and Emelec were leading 3-0 at the start. The referee had a bit of a hair-trigger whistle, and saw off three Emelec players via the valentine card. Despite being down to eight (!) men, Emelec had enough to hold on for the 3-2 victory.
Barcelona now sit alone in seventh place in the table, while Emelec moved to fifth for its troubles. Just nasty business.
