El Nine’s Masked Celebration

Ecuador striker Ivan Kaviedes paid tribute to fallen teammate Otilino Tenorio with his mask celebration in La Tri’s 3-0 defeat of Costa Rica. After scoring the third goal late in the match, El Nine pulled the mask out of his pants. It seems pretty clear that the move was to honor former Ecuadorian international Otilino Tenorio, who was killed in a car crash last year.

From the FIFA article: “Tenorio was known as Spiderman for his habit of donning the superhero’s mask during goal celebrations.” Tenorio often donned a mask just like El Nine did today.

Anyway, I mention this right away because although El Nine will probably get fined no matter what, it’s important to know that his move was just self-referential grandstanding. Let’s hope the moralizing chatterers don’t get get too haughty about this.

Trent,

Thanks for putting this out there. The more people know about the purpose behind the tribute the better. You know how the media can turn this around!! What a sweet pass that was from Mendez to Kaviedes.

So you going to Germany for the knockout phase?

Thank you Seleccion Ecuatoriana!! I was very saddened last year when Otilinio died and when Kaviedes scored and put on the mask I knew immediately that it was in honor of Otilinio. It was such a heart-felt move that it made me cry. It was a bit sad later while watching the ESPN coverage after the England match and hear the commentators (obviously they didn’t know the significance of the mask) dismissively mock Kaviedes tribute. Anyway today is a most amazing day and I wish I were in my native Quito celebrating down Avenida Amazonas. Y como dice la gran cancion de Pueblo Nuevo “A mi lindo Ecuador”
“CON AMOR SIEMPRE DEBES DECIR POR DONDEQUIERA QUE TU ESTES ECUATORIANO SOY!” Thanks for this great blog Trent!!!!! :)

You’ve summed it up nicely, Cristian. I’ve heard from many Ecuas, and they were all very touched by Kaviedes’ gesture. Let’s hope the majority of people realize the significance of it.

Trent, all,

I agree, Kaviedes’ gesture came from the heart and should not be punished severely.

I wish I could go to Germany but I can’t even get out of work early, nevermind fly across the Atlantic. My boss thinks I have a bladder problem now because i kept going back and forth to the bathroom to catch glimpses of the game at the front desk!

Excellent tribute. This needs to be properly told to all fans so it doesn’t end up looking like showboating or gloating…instead a teams tribute to a friend and fellow player!

[...] FIFA will not sanction Ecuador striker Ivan Kaviedes for his masked goal celebration against Costa Rica. Just so you read that right, let me say against: FIFA has decided not to impose punishment on El Nine for the mask. This is a great opportunity missed for FIFA. Don’t they love making senseless decisions that impugn what fans love about football? Huh. [...]

After witnessing 2 very good performances by Ecuador, I was curious to find out about the goal celebration of Ivan Kaviedes, as the English commentators failed to mention it, I visited various websites & found out the whole story, which I find very moving. Well done to El Nine for honouring his friend & teammate, definately the best goal celebration of the World Cup so far. It seems Otilino Tenorio was a real character. It looks as if England & Ecuador may meet in the next round, so perhaps more England fans will get to know the meaning of the celebration. May the best team win.

Thanks, Paul. I’m looking forward to the ECU/ENG match this weekend. Should be fun!

Also nice to see your boy Stevie G. come in and get a nice goal today.

[...] Marvel Comics enjoyed Ecuador striker Ivan Kaviedes’ masked goal celebration as much as Ecuafans. You’ll no doubt remember that after scoring the third goal in Ecuador’s 3-0 Group A win over Costa Rica, Kaviedes pulled a Spider-Man-like mask from his panatloons as a tribute to striker Otilino Tenorio, who died in a 2005 car crash. Tenorio used to don a similar mask during his own goal celebrations in Ecuador’s domestic league. [...]

Where can I refer the FIFA sanction to a player who pulls up the front side of his jersey to cover his face when celebrating a goal?
