Ecuador Roster for Brazil Friendly

October 2nd, 2006 | By: Trent | 35 Comments »

Ecuador’s provisional roster has been released for the October 10 friendly against Brazil in Sweden. Of the 19 players named, only four weren’t with Coach Luis Suarez in Germany during the World Cup. To no one’s surprise, Carlos Tenorio won’t be with the team. The main surprise inclusion is Edmundo Zara, a striker who plays for Ecuadorian second-division side Imbabura. Full roster after the jump.

Goalkeepers: Cristian Mora (LDU Quito), Rorys Aragon (Standard Liege-Belgium)

Defenders: Ulises de la Cruz (Reading-England), Jairo Montano (Barcelona), Paul Ambrossi (LDU Quito), Jose Aguirre (Emelec), Ivan Hurtado (Al Arabi-Qatar), Jose Luis Perlaza (Olmedo), Giovanny Espinoza (LDU Quito)

Midfielders: Luis Antonio Valencia (Wigan-England), Segundo Castillo (Red Star Belgrade-Serbia), Edwin Tenorio (Barcelona), Luis Saritama (UANL/Tigres-Mxico), Edison Mendez (PSV Eindhoven-Netherlands), Patricio Urrutia (LDU-Quito)

Forwards: Felipe Caicedo (Basel-Switzerland), Felix Borja (Olympiakos-Greece), Ivan Kaviedes (Barcelona), Edmundo Zura (Imbabura)

I like this lineup. Lots of international experience, with just enough youth to make it interesting. Lots of European club experience as well these days. And assuming they continue to gel, that’s a tough midfield.

What do you think?

good point. mendez seemed lacking in the confidence department. Strong outings at PSV should restore all that.

Here’s a little article about Zura in today’s El Uni:

I think ecuador can very easelly surprice Brasil, with edison mendez, and valencia in the midfield, brasil will have a hard time

I think the final score is going to be 1-0 to ecuador

martin, chris,

thanks for the positive words.

Martin, you’re right, that midfield is filled to the brim with talent. I think Ecuador will play a more technical game than they did a few weeks ago against Peru at Giants Stadium. That Ecuador chose to sit back and attack only off of fast breaks.

I see a draw as well but an Ecua win isn’t out of the question. Dunga’s Brazil is more or less an experimental team and it’ll take time for them to click. If La Tri comes out of their corner swinging and goes 1 or 2 up early, they can definitely pull off the upset.

Anyone know what channel this will be on, or where it can be streamed?

PanaJ and others: I believe that the match will be shown on tape delay on Telemundo on Sat. the 14th.

That’s too late for most of us of course, but just in case we can’t find a better live feed, there will be that.

B/c Brazil is involved, I’m surprised the match isn’t more accessible that it appears it will be.

Something a little off the subject but for those who are as keen to see Ecuador vs Australia. Australia will be playing Paraguay tomorrow here at home in Australia and with this game being played as a fairwell for many “Socceroos” its sure to be another interesting clash :)

Only one I miss is Neicer Reasco de Sao Paulo. He would do well in this game.

david: As has happended a few times in the past with other Qatar clubs, Al Sadd would not release Carlos Tenorio for the friendly.

btw the guys just a follow up for all those interested in the Australia v Paraguay match up result. It turned out a draw after a pretty crazy last 5 minutes. The game should have been over in the 88th minute when Tony Popovic scored with a fanatstic header to put the “Socceroos” in front, but with only minutes of injury time remaining Australian Sub Michael Beauchamp made one of the most stupid decisions I have ever seen to header backwards to the keeper but managed to header the ball in the goal instead!!! to end the match 1-1.

infoplz–The match is actually scheduled for 8 p.m. local Swedish time, but 2 p.m. in the eastern United States. So, the match hasn’t yet started, although it will soon.
