Ecuador League: What’s on Tap

April 28th, 2006 | By: Trent | No Comments »

Herewith, a brief look at this weekend’s slate of matches in Ecuador’s top flight. You’ve already read about the Clasico del Astillero on Sunday, but eight other teams will be playing as well.

In the only Friday/Saturday match of the week, LDU Quito kick off the weekend later today as they host Cuenca. These clubs remain at opposite ends of the table, and with Liga’s recent form in the Copa Libertadores, I don’t see Cuenca getting a result even if Liga is without a couple of suspended players.

On Sunday, Macara hosts El Nacional in Ambato. El Nacho is only three points adrift of leaders LDU Quito, while Macara is now in trouble of getting passed by Cuenca in the standings. I look for the visitors to at least get a draw in this one.

Espoli will visit Aucas in Quito, with each team trying to keep pace with the middle of the pack. I’m going with Aucas at home.

The Estadio Olimpico in Riobamba will see Olmedo welcoming D. Quito. This match features the third- and fourth-place clubs, and the winner would automatically be in the mix with Liga and El Nacho. Nevertheless, I see a 1-1 draw.

Finally, the marquee match of the weekend will take place at the George Capwell Stadium on Sunday at 6:00 p.m. local time. Emelec took all three points earlier this year when Barcelona hosted this Shipyard Derby. I’m sure Los Toreros will come to the Capwell with revenge on their mind, but I’m taking Emelec in a 2-1 win.
