Ecuador League Roundup

Another week, another roundup of all the action in the Ecuadorian top flight.

Deportivo Quito beat Deportivo Cuenca 1-0 in Quito behind a 19th minute goal from Hernan Boderone. The win puts D. Quito into fourth place in the league, while Cuenca still languish at the bottom of the table.

Aucas got a nice road win by beating Macara 2-1. Wilson Segura put Aucas on top in the 29th minute, but the home crowd rejoiced when Luis Miguel Garces put home the equalizer just three minutes later. It looked for all the world that a draw was in the cards, until Pablo Palacios netted the game winner just nine minutes from time. The two sides now share the same point total (15), but Macara sit 5th while Aucas are in seventh on goal differential.

El Nacional blitzed Espoli 5-2 after coasting to a 4-0 halftime lead. A brace each by Ebelio Ordonez and Felix Borja, plus a goal by David Quiroz, proved too much for 9th place Espoli. El Nacional took the league lead, one point ahead of LDU Quito.

Olmedo kept their third-place position in the table by defeating Emelec 2-0. A brace by Carlos Quintero was enough to keep Emelec from recovering its recently-lost punishment points for using a disqualified player. Depending on whether the punishment sticks, Emelec are now either in 8th or 9th place in the table.

The last match of the weekend was also the most highly anticipated. Barcelona (de Guayaquil), once facing relegation at the bottom of the table, have now won five straight league matches after beating LDU Quito 1-0. A 52nd minute goal from Derlis Florentin was enough to secure the victory and propel Barcelona into sixth place, behind Macara only on goal differential. LDU Quito slipped into second place with the loss.

You’re kidding me. As soon as I start supporting Emelec they get beat by my former team. I’m not sure if my stomach can survive a season of Ecuador league football.

Yeah, I was surprised to see Emelec lose 2-0 to Olmedo. But this all makes be psyched for the next Barca-Emelec match. Should be a good one!
