Ecuador League Roundup

This week’s matches in Ecuador’s Serie A have already taken place. LDU Quito capped its good Copa Libertadores week with a vault into first place on the league. As an aside, why does the Fox English-language football channel refer to LDU Quito as “Quito”? LDU Quito or Liga will be fine, thanks. There’s already another team referred to as Quito in that league. Ah well. Notes after the jump.

Emelec worked Cuenca 3-0 behind three second half goals from Marcos Mondaini, Joe Luis Quinonez and Luis Escalada. Emelec now sit third in the table, just three points behind second-place El Nacional. Cuenca have returned to the bottom of the table after a few weeks of bouncing around.

Aucas upset visiting El Nacional 2-1 with goals from Wilson Segura and Christian Valencia. New Olympiakos man Felix Borja did not play for El Nacho. Aucas remain in sixth place.

Espoli and D. Quito played to a 1-1 draw in Cayambe, with each team scoring in the last fifteen minutes of the match. Quito stay in fifth place, while Espoli move into ninth.

Macara beat Barcelona 2-1 when Cristian Bottero scored the winner in the 86th minute. Jhonny Baldeon, recently left out of the World Cup squad, did acquit himself with Barcelona’s lone goal. Macara pulled even with seventh-place Barcelona in points, but remain one notch back due to goal differential.

As alluded to up top, LDU Quito defeated Olmedo 3-0 on Friday at the Casa Blanca. The win put Liga three points ahead of El Nacional at the top of the table. Olmedo fell from third to fourth place.
