Ecuador League Roundup
It’s that time of the week again, kids. Time to take a look at all of the results from this weekend’s matches in the Ecuadorian top flight. Emelec opened the new and improved George Capwell Stadium, while LDU Quito hoped to put a little more distance between it and the field. Full recaps after the jump.
Cuenca started off the weekend with a 2-1 win over Macara on Friday. Omar Guerra (66’) got things started for the home side, but a draw seemed likely when Macara’s Bolivar Gomez headed home the equalizer in the 86th. But just before time, Ezequiel Scarione scored the winner just before full time. Cuenca are still at the foot of the table, but now sit within three points of Macara, whom they lead in goal differential.
Esteban Novoa and Marcelo Velazco goals ensured that D. Quito defeated Barcelona 2-1. Quito are now only five points behind league leaders LDU Quito, while Los Toreros now sit in sixth.
Espoli and LDU Quito drew 2-2 on Saturday in Cayambe. Espoli surprised LDU Quito who may still have been on a high after qualifying for the next round of the Copa Libertadores. Liga still sit comfortably atop the table, while Espoli remain a full thirteen points behind the league leaders.
Hosts El Nacional defeated Olmedo 2-0 behind goals from Ecuadorian international Felix Borja and Wellington Sanchez. Olmedo chances at a comeback were dimmed just after the second goal when the Argentinean midfielder German Castillo was sent off for saying things about the ref’s momma. El Nacho remain in second for the week, three points behind league leaders LDU Quito. Olmedo sit in fourth after being leapfrogged by D. Quito.
On the first day of the new and improved Estadio George Capwell, Emelec gave its fans a solid though hard-fought 1-0 win over Aucas. Luis Escalada’s 67th minute goal was enough for Emelec to take the three points and settle into fifth place in the table. The match was not without shenanigans; a total of four red cards-two for each team-were handed out by the referee. Aucas are level on points with Emelec, but sit in seventh on goal differential. Any pictures or stories from our Emelec fans concerning the stadium re-opening? Were you there?
