Ecuador Domestic League…So Far

July 24th, 2006 | By: Trent | 3 Comments »

Four games in, there are some interesting surprises in Ecuador’s top flight table.

Team Points GD
Olmedo 10 4
Barcelona 9 5
El Nacional 9 5
Quito 9 3
Macara 6 -1
Cuenca 4 0
Emelec 4 0
Azogues 4 -3
Liga 3 -6
Aucas 0 -7

The biggest surprise, of course, is Liga de Quito sitting in 9th place. Even top-flight newcomer Azogues has had a better showing. Liga’s post-World Cup month has been abysmal.

Speaking of Azogues, at least they’ve got a couple of results.

Olmedo and El Nacional had good showings in the Spring, but Barcelona’s play has got to be making its fans happy.

Us Liga fans are shamed but while everyone was resting, the core of our team was getting out of the group stages of the World Cup. The Europe-based players are just starting training today so I am convinced that Liga will come back but wont say that too loudly after yesterday’s 5-1 loss. Yuck.

It seems impossible that Liga would lose to Olmedo and Azogues, then convincingly beat Nacional, only to get shelled by D. Quito. But this is reminiscent of last year’s Clausura for Liga. I hope it doesn’t become a trend in the next years.
