Ecuador 1-1 Colombia
It was quite a scene at New Jersey’s Giants Stadium this evening, as Ecuador drew 1-1 with Colombia. I’m still on the road, but will post much, much more at least by tomorrow morning/afternoon, including several pictures.
60,000 football fans showed up, and surely 50,000 were Ecua fans. A great, great atmosphere, and plenty to take away from this match even though Coach Suarez still didn’t utilize what’s likely to be the starting lineup against Poland on June 6. For example, no Agustin Delgado, although two forwards were used (Ivan Kaviedes and Felix Borja).
Inital thoughts from those who were there or watched the match? Will Morita give everyone heart attacks this summer?

I am very happy to see the attendance at the Giants Stadium. What a great way to wish the team the best in the world cup. I am assuming that against Macedonia, Villafuerte will start in order to be able to make a good decision on the starting goalkeeping. Mora was a disaster. Very unsecure with almost every goal he received. When he went out to chase the ball, was a very bad decision. He is a good goalkeeper but he needs to settle down and be more confident. Most of the balls he grabbed was after releasing them once, that is just not acceptable. Faster forwards like Klose or Wanchope will take advantage of it.
The choice on the starting lineup was smart. A lot of players like Borja, Ambrossi, Castillo needs a lot of exposure to the international games and i think they did well. Valencia and Kaviedes had some good moments altough we need to get closer to the area and not always rely on distance shots (not that we had that many anyways). Kaviedes attitude was very good and he adds a lot of elegance to our attack. When he gets paired with Delgado he will score. Mendez looked a bit tired but we know he can perform. Hurtado as always did a very solid job. He is someone very reliable with the ball. The substitutions were smart. Lara didn’t shine, but i am sure he’ll do better. Benitez played with a lot of heart, he just needs more experience and that’s whathe is there for. Urrutia i think will play well in Germany, very strong and fast. Saritama is a good substitute player. Overall i was happy to see how the team played. Colombia will always be a good team for us to examine our performance and level. There is a lot of room to improove but it was obvious that the team has been training hard and it looked much better than the prevous friendly matches. Keep it up!

Mr. Trent,
Glad to hear you enjoyed the match. If you got to the stadium around 730 or so and were ushered to the back lot, you prob. saw me and my friend standing on the orange guardrail waving the flag. I was seating behind Morita in the first half (white t-shirt and red Che flag), in case you got pics!
The game turned out to be a big disappointment. It’s kind of mind-boggling Suarez chose to bench UDLC, Marlon Ayovi and Agustin Delgado. He was, essentially, still testing players. Colombia looked far more organized and settled than did Ecuador. It really isn’t the altitude but the attitude that affects Ecuador’s play. Outside of Quito they just don’t play with ganas. Larita was disappointing, Mendez looked listless and Borja could not get comfortable. There’s still a lot of work that needs to be done with the team before the WC, and not much time to do it.

hey i was able to go to the game with my cousin. More ecuadorians than colombians. i did not like how ecuador played. Ecuador’s passes had to be more secure. I thought everytime we passed colombia would intercept a pass. O well im sastfied wit the score. At least ecuador didn’t lose. But still could have won.

Telemundo will also re air this game Sunday at 1 pm EDT, 10 am PDT for thsoe of us who didn’t get a chance to see it. I’m not surprised by the outcome. Ecuador and Colombia always play each other close.
Unlike El Bolillo Gomez who showed his hand by playing so many pre World Cup friendlies in 2002, Suarez is not wanting to show the opposition too much of what Ecuador has now. I am not surprised Delgado and de la Cruz didn’t play last night. I am glad to read that Castillo played pretty well but disappointed in Mora’s play in goal. I too feel Villafuerte should get the opportunity against Macedonia this weekend.
But perhaps the best news is the reports here on Kaviedes’ play. His creativity and ability to work with Delgado will be vital if Ecuador is to have a successful World Cup.
I look forward to seeing the replay of this match on Sunday.

Hi guys,
I was at the stadium yesterday and I think Ecuador has to improve a lot if they want to get through the first round at the World Cup. Mora was a disaster, really unsecure. Their defense showed a total lack of coordination. I think their best line was the attack, with Kaviedes showing a lot of movility through both sides of the field.
But we should know for sure that Poland will be a more ordered and solid team than Colombia was. Lets see what happens at the game against Macedonia, which is a team very similar to Poland. By the way, I heard this game will also be broadcasted in the US through ECUAVISA INTERNACIONAL, as Mario said.

That sea of yellow created by Ecuador (and Colombia) fans was thrilling.
The Atmosphere was incredible, the chanting, the banter, the drumming, the ohhhhs and ahhhs…What a spectacle it was…
Unfortunately the match did not meet expectation.
Ecuador should be a lot sharper by now- 2 weeks to the world cup.
They don’t play direct, (this has always been there style), they are too content keeping possession around Midfield, but can’t seem to know how to move well into the final 3rd of the pitch. We have a lot of option in the middle, but we will only get out of the Group stage if our MIDS can transition better and faster into attack…
Also I hope our midfield play sires the opposition, and breaks them down
The Main problem I saw was that Mendes was having an off night. And Borja was pitiful. He just wasn’t reading the pass plays as everyone lese did.
He also isn’t creative enough to feed Kaviedes. With Delgado, if he stays healthy, and Kaviedes (& Tenorio as sub) we should be good up front.
Kaviedes was man of the match in my opinion. He was very dominant – classy, creative, and confident- but Borja didn’t know how to play with him or even how to play ON-sides. Lara didn’t get into this game well or soon enough, but if he comes off the bench sooner, he can make a difference.
The Defense was very solid – minus the very spotty Mora. I think Mora was trying to earn the starting role by exposing himself more then he needed to (playing aggressively- Like trying to beat a forward with his feet instead of just clearing it out into the stands) …. Had he kept a more conservative approach to his game-he may have looked better- rather he looked like a David James at his worse. I haven’t seen Villafuerte in a while but he can’t be worse them mora and what I recall is he is very calm and conservative.
Our wing play is good but UDLC will make a big difference when he starts…
Its easy for me to say all this, I don’t have the weight of the World on my shoulders.
Overall, Ecuador is looking fair. With our starting 11, we will be much better. But we can’t lose our concentration for 1 second… that’s all it takes for us to miss the round of 16.
Vs POL draw 1-1
Vs GER Lose 1-0
Vs CRC win 2-1
We have a chance to go as 2nd best in group tied to Poland but beat them on goal diff…
Que viva quito….

Saw the game on TV (Channel 8 for those who live in South Florida, you can see the game against Macedonia live at 1:00 pm on Sunday).
I’m afraid the team will play like that in Germany and we will lose all three games.
The second half was a little better, but we have to apply pressure and create more scoring opportunities. We hold the ball to much and in the first half looked for the thru balls or long runs, and that’s not our game.
We need to have mendez play more like a 10 and not an 8.
Right now we are playing with 4 8’s in the middle, which is OK because 3 are offensive minded, but we need to have Mendez and Valencia be more attack minded.

Hoo boy. I just got back to my home, eight and a half hours late, due to the sweet New Jersey rail power outage. Which caused me to miss my plane. Which…you get the idea. Thanks for the great comments. More later!

[...] In what will be of particular interest to La Tri fans, tomorrow Ecuador Group A foe Poland plays Ecuador’s last friendly opponent, Colombia. Ecuador drew with Colombia 1-1 last Wednesday in the US. It will be interesting to see how Poland fares against Colombia in light of that recent match. Ecuador coach Luis Suarez will be in attendance. On June 2, the Colombians will also play Germany. [...]
