Copa America Roster
I’m a little behind on getting this up, but here is Ecuador’s roster for the nearly-here Copa America tournament to be held in Venezuela. There’s still a pretty good squad within these names, but I still wonder from where the goals are going to come. Besides Super Teno of course. So, check out the roster after the jump, and let us all know what you think!
Updated Below!
Goalkeepers: Cristian Mora (Liga de Quito), Marcelo Elizaga (Emelec)
Defenders: Ulises De la Cruz (Reading), Neicer Reasco (Sao Paulo), Oscar Bagui (Olmedo), Ivan Hurtado (Atletico Nacional), Giovanni Espinoza (Vitesse Arnhem), Jorge Guagua (Colon de Santa Fe), Renan Calle (Liga de Quito)
Midfielders: Edison Mendez (PSV Eindhoven), Luis Antonio Valencia (Wigan Athletic), Segundo Castillo (Red Star Belgrade), Edwin Tenorio (Liga de Quito), Patricio Urrutia (Liga de Quito), David Quiroz (El Nacional), Walter Ayovi (El Nacional), Luis Caicedo (Olmedo)
Strikers: Carlos Tenorio (Al Saad), Felix Borja (Olympiakos), Cristian Benitez (El Nacional), Felipe Caicedo (Basel), Pablo Palacios (Deportivo Quito).
Update:
One obvious difference between this roster and last year’s World Cup roster is the presence of more foreign clubs in the little parenthesis after the players’ names.
In 2006, the foreign clubs represented were: Aston Villa (UDLC), Al Arabi (Hurtado), Al Sadd (C. Tenorio) Argentonis Juniors (Kaviedes) and Recreativo de Huelva (Valencia).
This time around, we’ve got: PSV Eindhoven (Mendez), Reading (UDLC), Wigan (Valencia), Al Sadd (C. Tenorio), Sao Paolo (Reasco), Colon de Santa Fe (Guagua), Vitesse Arnhem (Espinoza), Red Star Belgrade (Castillo), Basel (F. Caicedo) and Olympiakos (Borja).
That’s double the foreign contingency in just a year. And some of those are fairly big name clubs. All this isn’t to rag on the Ecuadorian Serie A. It’s just that non-European teams don’t do well in major tournaments when all of their players play domestically. True even for Brazil and Argentina, as we all know.

I think the roster makes sense. We were suffering in midfield and I see Valencia and Mendez in the line up. I hope Guagua replaces Hurtado. I prefer Jorge than Ivan.
I am surprised that Kaviedes was not called up. He is good in breaking up the defense.
Lets see what happens. The key is that they play like a solid team and the opposing not score in the first minute (Ha ha ha)

you can download sopcast to watch the matches….search for it on google.
plus, they’re showing dem on skysports.
i really waned to see el mago salas on the lineup, he must b missin 4 a reason tho.

Kaviedes is a pakete like he demonstrated against Peru. Glad he’s not here.
True about Guagua (who might go to Recre Huelva next season in Spain) being faster than Hurtado but bam bam has more tecnique and ability in the air. I actually think that Ivan will be starting lineup.
You see, what the problem was against United States and Mexico was that they tried to dominate the game. Ecuador is not like that. Our seleccion will not win unless they defend and then counter atack often like against Peru. Only now with our players in Europe we’ll do even better.

And what happened to Saritama and the goalkeeper Aragon? They play well.

Boycott Copa America until the ban is lifted!!!

Im wondering where the scoring is going to come from if Agustin Delgado and Ivan Kaviedes are not in the roster. Im suprised that they are not in the roster becasue they did good in the 2006 fifa world cup. Delgado scored two goals against poland and Costa Rica and Kaviedes scored one goal against Costa Rica. Come on what is ecuador thinking.

I truly beleive Ecudor are at their best when they counter attack too. They must discipline themselves in a good defensive manner like they did against Poland last year and be patient- the team are full of strong guys who can bide their time and sap the oppositions stamina and beat them -as Polands coach said-’emotionally and physically’.

TRUE!!! Good pace and organisation is the key! I wanna see the solid, compact, organised and methodical team that they presented in Germany!!! It was truly a joy to watch Ecuador play in that world cup!!! They looked so well together, there was not a mistake or misunderstanding between player, they knew what to do at every touch of the ball. Honestly, no otherteam showed the same organisation and Ecuador was feared by the rest!! England was well scared and relieved after Beckham’s coal!!!! Fuerza Ecuador!!!!

Man im glad to see la sombra back. We need him.

I am pretty confident we will do very well. In our group we are playing against Mexico who has not performed as well. They were below avearge in the Gold CUp being held now in the states. Chile is so so and Brazil would be our tough opponent.
