Champions League Update
Before we get to the details, I’d like to say how nice it is to be reporting on the status of Ecuadorian footballers’ tam in the UEFA Champions League, the world’s most prestigious club competition. That seemed pretty ridiculous at the beginning of the year, didn’t it?
Edison Mendez’ PSV Eindhoven side lost 1-3 to Bordeaux in a lackluster effort from the Dutch side. Really, it wasn’t even as close as the score suggests. The good news–and likely the explanation of PSV’s effort here–was that they had already qualified for the next round and today’s result was otherwise meaningless. So, congrats to Edison for making the next round of the Champions League.
No such luck for Felix Borja and Greek champs Olympiakos, who once again finished bottom of their group after drawing 1-1 with Shakhtar Donetsk. Borja was brought on as a sub in the second half, but was unable to produce a winner. There’s always next year, though, for Olympiakos. I’m guessing.
